Why we don’t date Capricorns.

A PSA from every women who’s tried

Somewhere out there, a Cap will find this article, and be absolutely infuriated. I can already predict the text: no punctuation, all aggression. So let’s get it straight: this is not personal. This is clinical. Consider it a public service announcement.

We — and by we, I mean me, my girls, my friends’ friends, and apparently every woman with a functioning nervous system — do not date Capricorns. We’ve tried. We’ve failed. Sorry. We just can’t do it anymore. We took the L, packed our bags, and got home to gossip about it instead.

One important thing about Caps: they don’t do dating. They do transactions. Their approach isn’t fresh and free flowing. There’s no getting-to-know-you phase where you’re allowed to be slightly mysterious and a bit of unavailable. No—Caps want to know, within about the first ten minutes, whether they can lock you down right off the bat. Not because he’s some hopeless romantic. Because his sign fears failure more than any other zodiac—and a relationship without a label, to him, is a big fat F on his report card.

I’ll be the first one to admit that I found that whole ‘cold thing’ attractive. Sexy. The short (vague) answers, the raised eyebrows, the whole ‘I don’t get into my feelings’ routine. I thought it was part of his game. That intimidating-you-have-to-figure-me-out-if-you-want-to-be-with-me persona. Come on…I thought he was playing hard to get.

But girlfriend, it was not a persona. He genuinely doesn’t know what to do with an emotion if you slapped him in the face with it.

Here’s how you know you’re being courted by a Capricorn—the short version.

  • He asks about your job/work ethic before he cares to know your last name. Being a Cardinal sign (highly ambitious and career-obsessed), he wants a partner who’s as married to their five-year plan as he is to his.

  • He’ll ghost you for two weeks, call what you have casual, just to test how independent you are. But this is anything but casual. This is a psych-op. Some twisted, psychological evaluation with a 0% pass rate. He wants to know how needy you are. How much you’re into him. How much you’re willing to sacrifice for him.

  • He takes forever to make decisions—the restaurant, the relationship, whether you’re serious, even whether he says he likes you. God forbid he commits to something, and it turns out to be wrong. Most Cap men hate playing games. They almost aways choose the tried and true option over a risky adventure—I’d bet every time.

  • He’s asked you if you tipped the waiter. I don’t make the rules. This is a real Capricorn litmus test—and if you didn’t tip enough, you’ve failed another one of his tests.

  • He needs his alone time and doesn’t have to tell you why. You have to respect his boundary and not ask questions. His boundaries don’t owe you a text.

Under that controlled, responsible, bring-home-to-mama facade is a low-grade control freak who’s convinced himself that “taking charge” is a personality trait and not a coping mechanism. Sure, he’ll provide for you, protect you, plan your whole future in a five-year game plan; but somewhere in the mix, he’ll begin to treat you less like his girlfriend and more like his own personal HR department. He’s great at delegating. Less great at listening.

Story-time

Capricorns are ruled by Saturn—the planet of responsibility and structure. So I can’t stress this enough—they have a vibe so serious, I started apologizing for laughing too loud on a dinner date. When he’s not being the serious type, he’s doing something worse: observing. Watching. Lurking. Waiting for you slip-up. Cataloguing your every move in some mental filing cabinet he’ll reference later—usually mid-argument, and usually with a “quote”.

I caught my Cap’s mask slip once when I complimented another man’s ambition in front of him. It was like watching Saturn itself burn the house down. When you mix a personality that strives to avoid hurt or disappointment (a control freak) and you compliment another male that seems to have it all together and in charge of his own life—you get a disaster of a conversation on your ride home in the car. You were flirting. You think he’s better than me. You liked him? Go be with him.

They may not be the spontaneous type when it comes to love, and they may not physically say the words I like you a lot —but when a cap does fall for you —they fall hard. And if you decide to end things, you’re pretty much stuck for a couple of extra months trying to get rid of them . They literally won’t quit. They have this loyal and assertive nature about them, but it walks a thin line with delusion and clouding of judgement.

Now for a quick honorable mention, because misery loves company and astrology loves a good contrast—the Sagittarius woman (me), a Capricorn's worst nightmare. We’re the ones who tell you the truth so bluntly it will sting for days—not because we’re cruel or mean, but because being soft was never really our forte. We love family, but we’re already out the door on some unplanned adventure that starts with ‘this might be a bad idea, but—.’ We will feed our relationships passion, chaos, and a great f*ckin’ story. But we won’t, under any circumstances, give up our freedom for a relationship.

Capricorns want to build something together. Something stable. But a Sag woman wants to take off the following Tuesday for a new project. Putting these two personalities in a room, you’re just asking for mayhem.

But this is all good fun! Date a Cap (at your own risk), if you want a solid five-year plan, mild existential crisis, and someone who will love you so hard you’ll need a lawyer to get out. But I’m just the messenger! With receipts. ;)
